ABOUT THE WORKSHOP

Sketchbook by the Sea is a weekend in which we dedicate ourselves to drawing on location, and our location is Croatia’s premier island - Hvar. Please bring your usual sketching supplies, watercolour, paper, pens, sketchbook. In addition please bring 3 or more felt-tip pens and acrylic markers in colours inspired by the sea (a light-toned acrylic marker is especially helpful). JENNY ADAM

Tides & Texture: Sketching the Sea

in Mixed Media

Workshop Hvar

Explore urban sketching in Hvar, Croatia, focusing on capturing water and surroundings with mixed media. Learn practical techniques for playing with colour, shapes, and mark-making to depict the dynamic nature of the sea. Perfect for artists of all levels, this workshop offers a hands-on experience in a picturesque setting.

OVERVIEW

In this workshop, we ́ll draw the azure waters and seascapes of Hvar with mixed media techniques. We ́ll start by studying colours, shapes, and mark-making to depict the dynamic nature of the sea. Fun exercises will help us discover unique colour combinations and we ́ll experiment with diverse media such as markers and crayons. We ́ll focus on capturing the water ́s reflections and playing with light and shadow to bring our seascapes to life!

MATERIALS

high grammage paper (min 200g/m2) adapted to wet techniques as watercolour (I use Hannemuhle A5 sketchbooks), HB pencil, your usual box of watercolours - we'll explore your palette together!, a waterproof (black) ink brush can be useful: I use the UNIPIN fine line "EFB", MICROPEN, UNIPIN or other black felt-tip pens in sizes 0.4 mm and 0.8 mm, coloured pencils (not watercolour pencils) to enhance some of the colours (I use FaberCastell Polychromos)

TAZAB

Drawing a natural landscape

Workshop Hvar

In this workshop, We’ll see together a step-by-step process for painting a landscape. It is open to everyone, beginners and advanced alike. The only condition is that you want to spend a convivial moment full of colour!

OVERVIEW

There's nothing like a short walk in the heart of nature to relax and open your sketchbook. Imagine: You've discovered a magnificent beach on the island of Hvar. So far, so good. But once you've installed yourself, you don't know where to start: the shimmering water, the elongated shadows of the pine trees, the rocks - it's all too complicated!

MATERIALS

I will use a black fine liner, watercolours, grey Tombow markers (ABT N95, N65, N45), and some coloured acrylic markers. You don’t need all of this. A fine liner and a set of watercolours are enough.

OLIVER HOELLER

Beach bums, tourists, locals

Workshop Hvar

If you are new to sketching people this will set you on your way. If you already have some experience, you’ll walk away with new enthusiasm for the topic.

OVERVIEW

Let’s explore drawing people and put them into little scenes!

I will share approaches, tips and tricks how to capture people out and about. You will learn to identify quickly what interests you in a person and focus to capture the essence in line and watercolour. I will share a step-by-step process, how to “buy time” as well as useful knowledge about body parts.
